Art and Design Why study Art and Design? Do you enjoy working with messy plaster, gungey paints, chunks of wood and all sorts of tools and equipment? Do you want to spray vibrantly coloured inks, use exotic feathers, fabrics, beads and threads or perhaps you would prefer to sit quietly and do some drawing and painting using a wide variety of excellent materials? You might even be interested in computer graphics or in processing your own photographs.
If the answer is "yes" to this little taster of all the exciting possibilities in doing a GCSE in Art and Design, then you should seriously consider choosing this very enjoyable and rewarding subject.
How will I study? Coursework will provide the opportunity to
• have enjoyment through experiencing a creative and imaginative use of a wide range of 2D and 3D art and design materials and techniques • develop an understanding and make use of the visual elements (colour, tone, line, shape, space, form, texture and pattern). • investigate artists and their work from European and non-European traditions.
Assessment The examination consists of two parts:
• Coursework (60%) • Externally set assignment (40%)
What next? Pupils who have a flair for and an interest in this subject may find it useful when choosing a career in Graphic Design, Furniture Design, Photography or in working with children in any capacity.
