Vocational Enhancement Programme
CCEA Occupational Studies Levels 1 and 2

The aim of the vocational enhancement programme is to give pupils a wider range of learning experiences that lead to recognised and approved qualifications. By participating in the programme the pupils will be able to make better career decisions based on wider options, develop key skills and take responsibility for their own learning. Students have the opportunity to sample various occupational areas prior to making choices about their progression route when they leave school at 16.

Hairdressing

Year 11 – Styling by Blow Drying

• Carry out a client evaluation
• Learn how to blow dry long and short hair
• Preparation of work area and client



Beauty

Year 12 – Provide a Nail Art Service

• Carry out a client evaluation
• Preparation of work area and client for nail art design
• Provide nail art design


Catering

Year 11 – Food Preparation and Cooking
(Patterisie)

• Learn basic cooking principles required by pastry chefs
• Learn how to work safely and hygienically, applying legislative requirements.
• Use creative skills when deciding how to present pastry products for service

Year 12 – Food Preparation and Cooking
(Kitchen and Larder)

• Learn basic cooking principles required by chefs in catering industry
• Learn how to work safely and hygienically, applying legislative requirements.
• Use creative skills when deciding how to present food for service

Sport

Year 11 – Sports Leadership

• Learn basic skills required to run a sports session
• Gain knowledge and skills required to assist in the running of a sport of physical activity session

Year 12 – Running a Leisure Event

• Work as part of a team and take on a number of roles
• Demonstrate good communication skills
• Meet deadlines take responsibility for a variety of tasks

Childcare

Year 11 – The Physical Care and Development
of Child

• Develop the basic skills in key areas of caring for children
• Develop the basic skills in providing a safe and secure environment for children

Year 12 – Enable Children to Participate in
Play Activities

• The importance of play in children’s learning development
• Basic outline of the expected pattern of children’s physical, communication, intellectual, social, emotional and behavioural development

Technology

Year 11 – Digital Imaging

• Introduction to digital imaging
• Image capture with a digital camera and scanner
• Advanced image manipulation and output options

Year 12 – Digital Music

• Introduction to digital music production
• Advanced functionalities of digital music software, mixing and sampling
• Completion of track(s) for output

Retail

Year 11 – Payment Methods and Stock
Control

• Learn how stock is purchased through the various payment methods
• Learn about the various stock control systems in place in a wide variety of different retail organisations

Year 12 – Customer Service

• Learn what constitutes effective customer service
• Understanding the customers’ needs and expectations
• Making sure customers return

Brickwork

Year 11 – Brickwork (1)

• Appropriate use of brickwork hand tools
• Construction of a range of brickwork models in half-brick and solid walling
• Health and safety with respect to workshop activities

Year 12 – Brickwork (2)

• Appropriate use of an increased number of brickwork hand tools
• Brick paving in appropriate scale and patterns
• Construction of a range of brickwork models in half-brick and solid walling incorporating a small arch centre

Joinery

Year 11 – Carpentry and Joinery (1)

• Appropriate use of basic carpentry and joinery hand tools
• Construction of a range of carpentry and joinery models incorporating a wide range of joints and jointing methods

Year 12 – Carpentry and Joinery (2)

• Appropriate use of increased number of carpentry and joinery hand tools
• Basic techniques of cutting, jointing, boring and planning to produce construction related components
• Construction of a range of carpentry and joinery models

Plastering

Year 11 – Plastering (1)

• Appropriate use of plastering hand tools
• Applying a scratch coat and bell cast to a wall
• Applying a plain rendering and Tyrolean finish

Year 12 – Plastering (2)

• Appropriate use of plastering hand tools
• Applying a floating coat to walls
• Applying and finishing the setting coat to a floated wall including fixing panel moulds

Tiling

Year 12 – Tiling

• Appropriate use of basic tiling activities
• Marking out and cutting tiles to required drawings
• Tile and area of wall which includes a window, a border or pattern and make cuts for double socket


Mechanics

Year 11 – Basic Vehicle Maintenance

• Basic vehicle maintenance in the main areas found in modern motor
• Working with the electrical system, servicing oil, water, brake fluid, spark plugs and points

Year 12 – Car Body Repair

• Basic understanding of vehicle body components and fittings

Engineering

Year 11 – Manufacturing Techniques

• Construct sheet metal components, marking out bends and rivets’ positions, drilling and joining using rivets

Year 12 – Electrical Wiring Practices

• Introduction to wiring techniques and standards through the use of practical work
