Technology and Design (Product Design)

Why study Technology and Design?

Technology and Design looks at how technology products work in the home, in industry and in the environment. Pupils will have opportunities to analyse existing products; develop practical solutions to consumer needs; understand that designing and making reflect and influence cultures and societies; understand that products have an impact on lifestyle; develop creativity and critical analysis skills; explore how aesthetic, technical, economic, environmental, ethical and social factors interact to shape designing and making and develop decision-making skills.
This subject is ideal for pupils who love sketching; enjoy creative thinking and problem solving, to research, design and manufacture quality technological products.
This is now a unitised specification. This means that students have the opportunity to sit two units in the first year of teaching.

How is the GCSE course assessed?

Controlled Assessments

Unit 4 The Design Assignment (Year 11) 20%

This is a 5 hour graphic design exam. Pupils are asked to solve a technological problem by developing concepts for a product showing ideas, manufacturing details and information on materials. This is presented in the form of annotated drawings on 4 x A3 sheets

Unit 5 Design Project (Year 11) 40%

Product Design and Manufacturing

The major design project will require pupils to submit a 10 x A3page design portfolio of evidence including research, analysis, design ideas, product development, technical drawings, a manufacturing plan and an evaluation.

Pupils will then have up to 15 hours to manufacture the product that they have designed.
