Why study Science?

• To extend the pupils' knowledge of Science from Key Stage 3, as taught at the Junior High Schools, to GCSE level at Key Stage 4.
• To promote an understanding and awareness of the basic concepts in science which the pupil will find useful not only in everyday situations but also throughout their lives.
• The GCSE courses in Science facilitate progression to the various BTEC, AS and A-Level courses offered in Colleges of Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges.

What courses are available?

• All students following a full GCSE programme are required to study Science to GCSE level by taking Core Science (Modular).

• Additional Science (Modular) is offered as an option to produce a Double Award at GCSE.

What do these Science courses involve?

Both Core Science and Additional Science are based on the study of aspects of:

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
• How Science works

How are the courses assessed?

Both courses are taught in Modular form. This means that the students are continually assessed throughout Year 11 and Year 12 for core science and additional science.

NB: Coursework is an essential part of both courses.

Additional Science Foundation C - G Core Science Foundation C - G
Additional Science Higher A* - D Core Science Higher A* - D

What next?

A Double Award Science (Core Science plus Additional Science) is necessary for those who wish to study a Science subject at ‘A’ Level or take National Diplomas in Sports Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Engineering or Health and Social Care.

A Single Award Science (Core Science) is beneficial to study NVQ’s in Beauty, Hairdressing, Meat Technology, Electrical Installation, Plumbing or Catering and Hospitality. It is useful for all vocational training courses.
