Physical Education
Why Study Physical Education? (GCSE)
• To excel in your best sport and strengthen your weak areas.
• To compete with other sports people analysing the performance of yourself and of others.
• To learn the way our bodies operate when we take part in sport and find out which personality is suited best to different sports and positions.
• To investigate the difference between being fit for life and being fit for sport.
• To look closely at the training used by the professionals.
• To develop good interpersonal skills, positive attitudes and the behaviour necessary to 'play the game'.
• To be able to pursue a career in sport.

How is the GCSE course assessed?

There is one single tier of entry.
This allows pupils to achieve grades in the range A* - G

The marks are allocated as follows:
• Practical 50%
• Oral Evaluation 20%
• Paper 1 (Theory paper 11/2hrs) 30%

What does the coursework involve?

• Practical – Pupils will be assessed on fitness and three other sporting activities.

• Oral Evaluation – Pupils will be required to plan and perform a six-week training programme aimed at improving a component of fitness after which they will present an oral evaluation with respect to its success.

What next?

GCSE PE is a useful subject to study for those wishing to work in the sports world, leisure industry, teaching, fitness industry and physiotherapy.

GCSE PE is useful to those wishing to go into Further Education to study courses such as ‘A’ Level PE, Sports Science, Leisure and Tourism, Sport and Recreation.
