Why study Information and Communication Technology?
The world is becoming increasingly dominated by the use of ICT systems, which influence every aspect of our everyday lives. Therefore, today's citizens need to be equipped with knowledge and skills to enable them to participate in a technological society.

What does the course involve?
The content of the GCSE course is presented in the following three sections

Computer Applications
• Experience in the use of word processing, spreadsheets and database software.
• Experience in the use of desk-top publishing, web-design, presentation and drawing software.
• Experience in the use of the internet, electronic mail and electronic conferencing.

Tools and Resources
• Knowledge and understanding of hardware and software systems.
• Knowledge and understanding of networks and communication systems.

Effects of using Information and Communication Technology
• Knowledge of the range of ICT applications in everyday life.
• Ability to identify the benefits and drawbacks of using ICT.
• Comparison of ICT with other methods.

Assessment
The scheme of assessment consists of two tiers:

• Foundation Tier Grades C - G inclusive
• Higher Tier Grades A* - E
Each tier consists of two examination papers and coursework.
• Examination papers 40%
• Coursework 60%


What next?
This option will develop in pupils the ICT skills needed to pursue a wide range of post 16 courses or careers.
