Home Economics Why study Home Economics? Home Economics is an interesting, exciting subject. In Year 11 you will enjoy a wide range of practical work producing tasty dishes. These can be taken home for family tea or, on occasions, eaten in class. The subject allows for lively class discussions covering a range of subjects of interest to teenagers today. All pupils studying Home Economics have the opportunity to achieve a Food Hygiene Certificate. This is of great benefit for those working part-time in restaurants, coffee shops etc. The subject is a good basis for entering Further Education Courses in areas like Caring and Catering. You are promised a wide range of hands-on experiences. What courses are available? Most pupils will study Home Economics to GCSE level. For those for whom GCSE is not appropriate there will be a one-year practical based course with the emphasis on skills. All pupils studying Home Economics will have the opportunity to sit the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health Food Hygiene Certificate. What does the GCSE course involve? The GCSE course involves the study of: • Family life • Diet and health • Choice and management of resources How is the GCSE course assessed? • External written examination 50% • Coursework 50% NB: Coursework is an essential part of the GCSE course. In order to sit this examination coursework must be completed by March of Year 12. What next? This is a suitable option for those pupils intending to work in Catering, Tourism, Childcare or in the field of Health Care.
